About the Program
The program offers an instructional program in Hunt Seat.
It is the objective of the Riding Program to provide instructional courses,
from the elementary through the advanced level, in order to complement
the various skill and theory levels of the students. Classes accommodate
not only the most experienced riders but also those who have never ridden
before. There is a minimum of two hours of required riding per week in
these courses. Private, Semi-private, and Group instruction, on a non-credit
basis is also offered.
Program History
Skidmore College has had a riding team since 1976. They
have an exceptional record. Since 1988, we have been #1 in Zone II, Region
II 8 out of 10 years. In addition, the Skidmore Riding Team was National
Champions in 1990, 1991, 1995, 1996, and 1999!! We were Reserve Champion
in 1994.
Horses/Boarding
Students need not bring their own horse in order to ride.
The program provides approximately 30 school horses who have been donated
or loaned to the program. However, Skidmore students are allowed to bring
their horses to school and board at the Van Lennep Riding Center if they
so choose. These students must be active participants in the riding program.
Activities
Students enrolled in the riding program may participate
in the following activities: AHSA and Schooling Horse Shows, Intercollegiate
Competition, Clinics, and Recreational Riding. The Van Lennep Riding Center
offers a year round program to both Skidmore Students and community riders.
