Life Beyond Skidmore Theatre

Internships, Study-Abroad, Career Planning and Graduate Work

Throughout the year, students are encouraged to take advantage of training and production opportunities outside of Skidmore College.

These experiences:

1. build on and enrich training offered in the department

2. help to build professional résumés

3. enable students to develop important professional contacts

4. offer training and production opportunities beyond that which we can offer on campus

We encourage our students to consider one or two semester study programs off-campus. Each year we send students to such programs as:

1. The Skidmore Shakespeare Programme (London)

2. The London Theatre Program (as a companion experience to The Shakespeare Programme)

3. The National Theatre Institute at the O'Neill Center

4. The NTI Moscow Program at the Moscow Art Theatre

5. The Gaiety Theatre Program in Dublin, Ireland

Every summer we send students to prestigious summer theatre programs and training programs including SITI, The Lake George Opera Festival, The Saratoga Shakespeare Company, The Williamstown Theatre Festival, The Adirondack Theatre Festival, Shakespeare and Company, Midsummer at Oxford, etc.

Occasionally, students are able to take a full semester away from Skidmore in order to fulfill a professional internship. We have placed students in such institutions as The Julliard School, The Dallas Theatre Center, The Guthrie Theatre, The Arena Theatre, L'Ecole Jacques Le Coq in Paris, and The BAC and the Kingshead Theatre in London.

A number of feature films have been produced in the NY Capital District and in Saratoga Springs (including Seabiscuit, The Skeptic, The Horse Whisperers, Billy Bathgate, Ghost Story, Disoriented, The Way We Were). When possible, students have been able to serve as interns and extras. A few students having even been able to land speaking roles and paying positions on crews. A number of students have gained SAG (Screen Actor Guild) eligibility through this work.

Career Planning

The Theater Major is a Pre-Professional program. For a small liberal arts college, we have always sent a surprisingly high number of our students into the professional fields of theater, television, theatre education and film.

We assist students in career planning in a number of different ways:

  • We work closely with the Skidmore College Career Planning Office
  • We sponsor events and guest artists - students have opportunities to meet working theatre professionals
  • We offer a Senior Seminar class specifically designed to help students with planning their next step in the profession
  • We offer an audition workshop to prepare students for professional auditions (unified auditions, open calls, graduate school, film and commercial auditions, etc.)
  • We encourage students to take advantage of internships through our Professional Field Experience Courses
  • In the Spring of 2007 we will innaugurate a Showcase Program. Seniors will showcase their talents in New York City for a number of guests. We plan on inviting casting directors and representatives from the half-dozen New York based theater companies that have been formed by Skidmore alumni over the years.
