Spring
2008
REGISTRATION INFORMATION
A. FIRST-YEAR
STUDENTS:
-
We intend
having a sufficient number of seats in TH104 (Intro to Acting) for
every first-year student who has completed TH103 (on campus or in
London) and is interested in acting. There will be four different
sections. You may not be able to get into you preferred time choice,
but we will get you into the class. If you are interested in pursuing
acting at Skidmore you really must take this course this spring -
IT IS NOT OFFERED IN THE FALL and you will not be able to take either
Intermediate Acting class until you have completed TH104.
-
In addition
to TH104, acting students should also consider taking TH198 (Movement
for the Theater). If you are taking TH101 (Voice) this semester, you
are eligible to take TH211 (Voice for the Actor) and you should certainly
consider taking it. Ideally, we would like you to have completed both
TH198 and TH101 by the time you take Intermediate Acting (at least
before the end of your sophomore year). If you are not in TH101 now,
you should plan on taking it next fall.
-
Only First-Year
students are eligible for ID151 (Shakespeare's Sonnets) for 1 credit.
We will be studying performance of the sonnets and there will be a
public presentation at the end of the semester (probably on or around
Shakespeare's birthday).
-
Once sophomores,
junior and seniors have registered, I will accept a number of first-year
students into TH242 (Acting Shakespeare). If you are interested I
will have to give you permission to take the class so you should let
me know if you're interested. This class will culminate with a public
presentation of monologues.
-
TH129 (Production)
and TH130 (Intro to Design) are offered every semester, but space
is limited. Both of these courses are required for the major and TH129
is a prerequisite for TH231 (Directing), also a requirement for the
major. Anyone interested in any aspect of production work should try
to take both of these courses as soon as possible.
-
TH230 (Theater
& Culture II) is offered every spring and TH229 (Theater &
Culture II) is offered every fall). BOTH are required for the major.
These are course that should be completed before the end of your junior
year. These two courses can be taken in either order.
B. SOPHOMORES, JUNIORS and SENIORS
-
Will Bond
will be offering TH203 (Intermediate Acting) and Kate Kelly will be
teaching TH204 (Intermediate Acting). Will's course focuses on Viewpoints
and Suzuki training and Kate's course focuses on various approaches
to Stanislavski training. Your goal should be to take BOTH courses,
presumably in your sophomore or junior year. Sometimes seniors who
have been abroad and who have not yet taken one or the other take
it in their final year.
-
TH304 (Special
Studies in Acting) is offered this spring. This will probably be an
advanced Viewpoints class (to be confirmed shortly).
-
TH211 (Voice
for the Actor) will be offered. Any actor who has taken TH101 (Voice)
is urged to consider taking TH211.
-
TH242 (Acting
Shakespeare) is another intermediate level acting class. Be aware
that it is only offered EVERY OTHER YEAR (though it may not be offered
in spring 2010 due to a sabbatical leave). TH104 is a prerequisite.
However, I will accept other students, but you will have to request
my permission. The class will culminate with a public presentation.
-
We will
be offering TH251B (Acting for the Camera) for the first time this
spring. It will be taught by Barbara Gulan. This course is for seniors
an juniors only.
-
If you
have not yet taken TH129, TH130, TH231, TH229, TH230 or a dramatic
literature course yet, you should at least have some sense of when
you will complete these courses which are required for the major.
-
This will
be the first time we are offering TH248 (Stage Lighting Practicum).
This is a 3 credit course. It will be taught by David Yergan. It does
not fulfill the all-college QR2 requirement. Our plan is to alternate
this course every spring with TH228 (the 4 credit QR2 lighting course).
Students interested in learning about light could take either course.
Lighting design students should take BOTH courses.
-
TH251A
(Audition Workshop) is primarily for senior actors. All senior actors
are expected to take this course since we will be using it to prepare
for the New York City showcase to be held during senior week. If there
is space available, non-seniors will be permitted to take the class.
-
Remember
that TH376 (Senior Project) is NOT required for the major, but IS
required for departmental honors. This course is generally fulfilled
by participating in either of the two departmental productions in
the semester. Students who prefer to pursue an independent project
(production or thesis) may request permission to do so. This can be
repeated for credit if you already took it in the fall.
D. GENERAL INFORMATION
FOR ALL STUDENTS
-
Gautam
Dasgupta will be offering TH334N (Asian Performance) - this fulfills
the all-college Non-Western requirement and the third history/theiry
course requirement for the major. He will also be offering (for the
first time) TH251B (Puppets, Dolls and Objects).
-
Lisa Grady-Willis,
a new member of the department, will be offering TH334 (Black Theater).
This fulfills the major requirement for the third history/theory course.
-
Patty Pawliczak
will be offering TH305B (Make-up) - a recommended course for all actors.
-
Gary Wilson
will be offering TH305D (Scenic Painting)
If
