Exploring
Careers
Do your advisees ever ask, "what are my options?"
or "what can I do with my major?" Let them know
there are career counselors who support your efforts and who
will help them find their answers. Be sure to refer them to
our career resources and our print
library of books in Career Services (Starbuck). What
Can I Do With This Major has career choices, internship,
employment, Career Advisor, Graduate School, and academic
department resources for specific majors.
Internships
Skidmore was founded on the guiding principle
of "education of the mind and the hand." Guide your
students to our internship resources
as well as the internship books in our reference center. Passwords
are are needed for some resources.
Remind
students that internship databases and books list both paid
and non-paid opportunities which may be pursued for academic
credit or not (please note: all credit-bearing internships
are processed through the Dean
of Studies office.
Graduate
School
Would your advisees be interested in searching the
Web for graduate school programs in their discipline(s)? Are
they concerned about financing their graduate studies? Tap
into our collection of graduate school
resources and encourage students to come into the office
for help in developing a personalized action plan.
Employment
Do your seniors or recent grads look to you for job
leads? Encourage them to work with Mike or Donna to develop
a personalized action plan which, among many other things,
might include steering them toward our Recruiting
Program, loading their resume or checking for leads in
JobCentral,
networking with alumni or parents in our Career Advisor Network, or prospecting for
opportunities.
