Tuition and Financial Aid

Tuition

Since MALS students design their own programs and work at their own pace—most often taking one or two courses a semester, but sometimes as many as three or four—the cost of the program varies for each student. Students pay a modest annual tuition fee as well as a pre-course fee for the individual courses they take. Typically, MALS students take most of their 30 credits of coursework as independent studies with Skidmore faculty.

On average, students studying part-time complete the program in three years, at a cost of approximately $9,000 a year.

For 2006-‘07:
Annual Tuition Fee = $6,000
Introductory Seminar = $1,500
Independent Study Fee = $1,000

Financial Aid

More than 40% of MALS students receive tuition assistance through a combination of federal loans, graduate scholarships, employer assistance programs, and extended payment plans.
Many of our students receive support through the Federal Stafford Loan program, which offers two types of assistance:

Subsidized Stafford Loans
Dependent on the student’s demonstration of financial need, subsidized loans are interest-free for the duration of the student’s enrollment in the program. To remain eligible for the loan, students must maintain at least half-time status. Students may borrow a maximum of $8,500 annually in subsidized loans.

Unsubsidized Stafford Loans
This type of loan is not based on a student’s economic need and requires that the student pay interest on the loan while enrolled. Students may borrow a maximum of $10,000 annually in unsubsidized loans.

Students may borrow a combination of subsidized and unsubsidized Stafford Loans in an amount of up to $18,500 per year. To apply for federal financial aid, you will need to submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). We can send you a copy, or you can complete the form online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Skidmore’s school code is 002814.

If you would like to discuss any financial aid issues, please contact Sandy Welter, our Financial Aid Officer, at 518-580-5488 / swelter@skidmore.edu.
