May 19, 16:15:10Student_Kevin -> EveryoneHere we go!
May 19, 16:16:26Student_Kendall -> EveryoneOnwards!
May 19, 16:18:57Particpant -> Panelist(s)I'm not sure if any of you are members of the Hillel, but if you are, can anyone tell us a little about membership and some of the Hillel's events? I am planning on joining.
May 19, 16:21:40Skidmore -> EveryoneWelcome everyone! We'll begin in less than 10 minutes. Please submit your questions now.
May 19, 16:22:34Particpant -> Panelist(s)How does one sign up for the pre orientation trips?
May 19, 16:27:21Particpant -> Panelist(s)If you could provide us with three pieces of advice for College, what would they be?
May 19, 16:29:25Particpant -> Panelist(s)Hey! I'm Rafa from Ecuador. I really don't understand what the Scribner Seminars are. Should they be directly linked to my possible major or just something that interests me?
May 19, 16:30:20Skidmore -> EveryoneOkay, here we go! Before we begin, the panelists will introduce themselves!
May 19, 16:30:26Student_George -> EveryoneHi Guys! Excited to get started with the live chat! My name is George. Im from North Adams, MA. And for everyone that doesn't know where that is, it's in Western Mass, the part of the state that isn't Boston. I'm a double major in Music and Psychology, and am a rising Junior. I enjoy long walks on the beach and the smell of fresh cut grass. No just kidding. I really enjoy playing the cello which is almost as lame. Can't wait to answer your questions!
May 19, 16:30:30Student_Lizzie -> EveryoneHello! My name is Lizzie and I'll be a Junior in the fall! I'm a neuroscience major with a heavy psychology concentration and do research in the neuroscience department on food, taste, smell and the gag reflex. I am from England and am involved with anything to do with food!
May 19, 16:30:33Student_Kevin -> EveryoneGreetings, minions. I am Kevin Berry. You may or may not know me from the critically acclaimed Facebook page, "Skidmore College Class of 2018," where I work as one of the moderators. I am known for my sass and honesty, and my favorite fruit is pineapple on some days and raspberries on others. Occasionally, I say strawberry just to keep it fresh. Ask me questions about anything, but especially about me being the only senior panelist, about the theatre department and gender studies program, about being the president of a club, and about being fabulously gay Gay GAY at Skidmore. You can also ask me anything about moving in, the transition to Skiddie, all the fun stuff. Like saying good-bye to your dog before you leave for school. You may also ask me about my current semester, being spent across a big wide ocean in London, Angland. ANGLAAAAAND. Peace n blessins, and welcome to my MTV Crib: Chatroom Edition. FABOOSH.
May 19, 16:30:36Marla_FYE -> EveryoneHi Everyone! My name is Marla Melito and I am the Student Academic Development Coordinator for the Office of the First-Year Experience and am here to answer questions about Orientation and the FYE.
May 19, 16:30:43Student_Kevin -> EveryoneMARLA
May 19, 16:31:09Student_Emily -> EveryoneHi! My name's Emily and I'm a sophomore from Trumbull, Connecticut. I am a double major in Psychology and Dance, and I'm involved in several public health groups on campus. Besides being a tour guide, I work as a member of our Dance Theater's production crew.
May 19, 16:33:10Particpant -> Panelist(s)Can any of the psych majors go into a little detail about what their life entails as a psych major? Especially if they are a double major as I have a strong interest in double majoring.
May 19, 16:33:15Student_Kendall -> EveryoneHi future schoolmates! I'm Kendall - can't wait to meet you guys in the fall! I am an education studies major with a concentration in theater. I was a peer mentor in the fall and a stage manager in the spring. I trekked to Skid from the West Coast and would be happy to relay some warm-to-cold advice.
May 19, 16:33:22Participant -> Student_KevinIf you could provide us with three pieces of advice for College, what would they be?
Student_Kevin -> ParticpantYO ICY - If I could give you three pieces of advice for college, they would be (and these are totally serious):

1. Pick your courses VERY carefully. Make sure you want to be in them because you're interested in them, not just because they fulfill the requirement. There are classes, plenty of them, that do both: fulfill you and your requirements.
2. Bring good socks.
3. Treat yourself every once in a while, whether to a movie, or a nice solo dinner out in town by yourself. The quiet nights where you do solo dates (my semester abroad, basically) are great for self-reflection as you move forward in your career and eventual search for a spouse.
May 19, 16:33:42Particpant -> Panelist(s)One thing I want to do at Skidmore is become a tour guide. How does one become one?
May 19, 16:34:13Participant -> Student_GeorgeIf you could provide us with three pieces of advice for College, what would they be?
Student_George -> ParticpantHey Iceberg! First piece of advice: DO A PRE-O. They're great opportunities to make friends and get involved with social life before having to do classes. Second: Get involved. If you want to hang out in your room all day, you totally can, but it isn't a great way to spend your four years here. Third: Use the resources that the college offers. Whether its internships, academic, or social, the college offers tons of free resources for you to help get you through!
May 19, 16:34:30Participant -> Marla_FYEI am still a little confused about Scribner sessions and what are they exactly. How many can I choose?
Marla_FYE -> ParticpantHi Simran! The Scribner Seminars are 4 credit courses that all first-years take. These are small discussion based courses to help you with the academic and social transition to Skidmore. Please know that these are serious courses and need to be taken seriously. You will select you top ten choices by Wed. (May 21) and there is a computer program that places you.
May 19, 16:34:42Particpant -> Panelist(s)Nice to meet you guys! I'm an international student and I will arrive on August 23rd to attend the international pre-orientation. Can I stay at skidmore or I have to find a hotel in Saratoga Springs for a night? Thaks!
May 19, 16:34:54Participant -> Student_EmilyIf you could provide us with three pieces of advice for College, what would they be?
Student_Emily -> ParticpantHey! One piece of advice that I'd give in regards to college is to be open to new things and new people. A great way to get a jump start on making new friends is to do a Pre-Orientation. I met one of my closest friends on my "Pre-O", and had a great time exploring the Adirondacks for four days.
May 19, 16:35:45Particpant -> Panelist(s)Hi! I'm from a very temperate part of the west coast (Portland, OR)--any tips on preparing for real seasons/what clothes and equipment are crucial?
May 19, 16:35:48Particpant -> Panelist(s)Being from the California - what advice do you have on keeping warm?
May 19, 16:36:01Particpant -> Panelist(s)What do you usually do in the Scribner Seminar?
May 19, 16:36:57Student_Kevin -> EveryoneHAHA WHERE ARE THE QUESTIONS IT'S 12:36AM DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR QUESTIONS ARE?
May 19, 16:36:59Participant -> Student_LizzieIf you could provide us with three pieces of advice for College, what would they be?
Student_Lizzie -> ParticpantHey iceberg! My advice would be to try out as many things, clubs, sports, as possible. This is a great way to meet people and also just experience college. My transition to college life as been so much easier because of this! Another piece of advice is to just take time during the week to do something that you love like food :) My final piece of advice would be to take advantage of the town! Saratoga Springs is such a nice place to live and there are so many things to do, great food (in case you haven't realized I'm on a food theme), movies and shops!
May 19, 16:37:09Particpant -> Panelist(s)Should we be shopping at REI for winter clothes?
May 19, 16:37:10Particpant -> Panelist(s)So about the Scribner seminars,how important is it for my choices to be related to my future probable major? Also warm to cold weather advice?
May 19, 16:37:17Student_Kevin -> EveryoneI hope Marla does a video response. Stay tuned.
May 19, 16:37:18Participant -> Student_EmilyOne thing I want to do at Skidmore is become a tour guide. How does one become one?
Student_Emily -> ParticpantHey Noa! I became a tour guide this past semester! Basically you go through a series of interviews. Admissions counselors just want to see if you can think quickly on your feet to come up with appropriate responses to tricky questions. After getting through some interviews, you're required to memorize the manual of information. It seems like a lot, but if you're really enthusiastic about your school it's really just a fun process!
May 19, 16:38:02Particpant -> Panelist(s)How was the transition into college? I am worried that I am going to have difficulty adjusting to such a different lifestyle without my usual comforts.
May 19, 16:38:20Participant -> Student_GeorgeI'm not sure if any of you are members of the Hillel, but if you are, can anyone tell us a little about membership and some of the Hillel's events? I am planning on joining.
Student_George -> ParticpantHi Ray! I'm not a member of Hillel, but my RA was the president so I guess that makes me the most qualified person here (uh oh). As most of our clubs are, Hillel is all inclusive. My roommate was 100% Catholic and from Houston TX, and still went to Hillel events. They do Shabbat dinner and have events for the various holidays throughout the year. They also have a retreat that goes up to Lake George which I've only heard good things about! If you wanted more info, I would recommend contacting Ezra Levy at elevy@skidmore.edu!
May 19, 16:39:02Participant -> Student_KendallBeing from the California - what advice do you have on keeping warm?
Student_Kendall -> ParticpantHi Leah! I, too, was scared to leave sunshiny LA for snowy Saratoga. My advice to you is invest in a solid winter coat - you will practically live in it! If you have the basics (a coat, a beanie, some mittens, A SCARF!, etc.) you will be totally prepared. I have yet to ever crack out my long underwear...but that's something you can bring too if you're sensitive to the cold. It's all about the layers. Also, consider investing in some Vitamin D supplements!
May 19, 16:39:24Participant -> Student_EmilyCan any of the psych majors go into a little detail about what their life entails as a psych major? Especially if they are a double major as I have a strong interest in double majoring.
Student_Emily -> ParticpantHey, Ray! As a double major in Psychology and Dance, I can say that double-majoring is incredibly doable. It helps if you come into college knowing what you want both majors to be, but it's not necessary. I didn't decide to double major in these two departments until the second semester of my sophomore year, and I still have time to fill all my requirements and go abroad.
May 19, 16:39:33Participant -> Marla_FYENice to meet you guys! I'm an international student and I will arrive on August 23rd to attend the international pre-orientation. Can I stay at skidmore or I have to find a hotel in Saratoga Springs for a night? Thaks!
Marla_FYE -> ParticpantHi Hongqiao: You cannot stay at Skidmore until the day you are scheduled to arrive, so you will have to stay in a hotel for the night. August is a busy tourist time in Saratoga, so you'll want to plan now. Here is a link to the accommodations page from the Skidmore Website. Click Here
May 19, 16:40:36Particpant -> Panelist(s)I know that I have to fill the scribner seminars selection form(choose top 10 courses) and I want to know haw it works.
May 19, 16:40:50Particpant -> Panelist(s)When is the first night we can actually move our things in and stay the night at Skidmore?
May 19, 16:41:02Participant -> Student_LizzieHey! I'm Rafa from Ecuador. I really don't understand what the Scribner Seminars are. Should they be directly linked to my possible major or just something that interests me?
Student_Lizzie -> ParticpantHey Rafa!! When picking your scribner seminar it should really be a course that interests you. Sometimes it is nice to pick a course that is not necessarily in your major. They are interdisciplinary courses that often combine 2 subject areas. Mine was a course called American memories and was a combination of history and psychology and was so much fun. It gave me a look into the sorts of topics that you could study in american history and psychology. It was a great way to explore classes that I would never have otherwise taken as a skidmore student.
May 19, 16:41:04Participant -> Student_GeorgeHow was the transition into college? I am worried that I am going to have difficulty adjusting to such a different lifestyle without my usual comforts.
Student_George -> ParticpantSup Icy Ice. Better than Kevins nickname? The transition to college is a huge anxiety provoking event in your life. The quicker you accept that, the easier it will be. The entire FYE program is designed to help make this transition easier. The Scribner Seminar sets you up with an instant 15 friends that live around you, go to class with you, and eat meals with you. Some of my best friends are from my Pre-orientation (Including EMILY HI EMILY).
May 19, 16:41:15Particpant -> Panelist(s)Just making sure.. the international students pre-orientation date is August 28th right?
May 19, 16:41:29Participant -> Student_KendallShould we be shopping at REI for winter clothes?
Student_Kendall -> ParticpantHi Jackie - it's totally a personal preference. REI is a good place to start. There's also Eddie Bauer, Patagonia, North Face, Adventure 16, Landsend, etc. You can also go bargain hunting at a local thrift store, but be sure you grab yourself something sturdy that will last through the winter. You'll live in your winter coat and hat, so make sure you like them! I always like to start my shopping on line then venture out into the world...but whatever is easiest for you. Hand-me-downs are great too!
May 19, 16:42:14Student_Kevin -> EveryoneTo go off of Kendall's response: Eddie Bauer is great if you wanna look rugged, but if you want rugged chic, yet still comfortably warm, LL Bean all the way.
May 19, 16:42:15Particpant -> Panelist(s)Are pets allowed on campus?
May 19, 16:42:57Particpant -> Panelist(s)Are there any singing clubs for students who have no music training experience?
May 19, 16:43:01Particpant -> Panelist(s)How many courses do I have to take in my first semester?
May 19, 16:43:05Particpant -> Panelist(s)What kind of things do Skidmore Students do for fun and on the weekends?
May 19, 16:43:34Particpant -> Panelist(s)If we can't attend Pre-O, will we have a harder time fitting in/transitioning?
May 19, 16:43:48Participant -> Marla_FYESo about the Scribner seminars,how important is it for my choices to be related to my future probable major? Also warm to cold weather advice?
Marla_FYE -> ParticpantThe choice of Scribner Seminar is up to you--pick something you are interested in and want to learn more about. You don't need to know your major just yet. Take advantage of the wide range of courses. Warm to cold weather advice--see Kevin's and Kendall's coat advice.
May 19, 16:44:17Participant -> Student_LizzieWhat do you usually do in the Scribner Seminar?
Student_Lizzie -> ParticpantView my VideoAnswer: Click Here
May 19, 16:44:30Participant -> Marla_FYEI know that I have to fill the scribner seminars selection form(choose top 10 courses) and I want to know haw it works.
Marla_FYE -> ParticpantHi Hongqiao, not sure what you mean how it works. Can you elaborate?
May 19, 16:44:42Participant -> Student_KevinWhat kind of things do Skidmore Students do for fun and on the weekends?
Student_Kevin -> ParticpantView my VideoAnswer: Click Here
May 19, 16:46:15Participant -> Student_EmilyAre pets allowed on campus?
Student_Emily -> ParticpantHi, Ice! pets are allowed on campus! But not really the cute, fuzzy ones
=(
However, you can have as many fish as you'd like! If you live in an on-campus apartment you're allowed to have little caged animals or whatever your housemates are comfortable with. But not in the dorms.
May 19, 16:46:35Participant -> Marla_FYEWhen is the first night we can actually move our things in and stay the night at Skidmore?
Marla_FYE -> ParticpantHi Jackie,
You can move in the day you are scheduled to arrive. Pre-O moves in on August 28th and everyone else moves in on Sunday, August 31. Here is the page with tentative orientation schedules http://www.skidmore.edu/orientation/
May 19, 16:46:52Particpant -> Panelist(s)What I mean about'how it works' is that why I need to choose top 10 courses?
May 19, 16:47:13Participant -> Student_KendallIf we can't attend Pre-O, will we have a harder time fitting in/transitioning?
Student_Kendall -> ParticpantGreat question, Jackie! Not to fret. I did not attend a Pre-O and was nervous to go onto campus without having already met a bunch of people...then again, whether you get to campus early or not, you'll face that same situation. It definitely takes some getting used to, but with a good attitude and faith that eventually you'll be ruling the school, you'll adjust just fine. And we are all here for you! Skidmore is such a supportive environment, you might find you'll have friends being thrown at you ;)
May 19, 16:47:23Particpant -> Panelist(s)How hard is it to get into a Pre-Orientation trip? If I sign up when registration opens, will I most likely get my first choice?
May 19, 16:47:27Particpant -> Panelist(s)What is the food like at skidmore :)
May 19, 16:47:39Particpant -> Panelist(s)Can friends from other colleges visit and crash in our dorms? Or will they have to stay at a hotel?
May 19, 16:47:52Particpant -> Panelist(s)so students stay on campus during winter break/spring break?
May 19, 16:48:06Participant -> Student_GeorgeAre there any singing clubs for students who have no music training experience?
Student_George -> ParticpantHi Hongqiao!There are lots of singing clubs on campus! Through the music department, we have a full choir that is all inclusive. The department also offers voice lessons for those looking to learn how to sing. Both of these options are options even if you are not a major! Theres also a number of acapellas that are all inclusive which is great! Also there is a cello quintet called acaCELLAS. I started it. It's awesome and completely irrelevant.
May 19, 16:48:10Participant -> Student_KevinCan friends from other colleges visit and crash in our dorms? Or will they have to stay at a hotel?
Student_Kevin -> ParticpantJG - Yes, for up to 3 nights.
May 19, 16:48:21Particpant -> Panelist(s)are the housing questionnaires ranked by when they are submitted?
May 19, 16:48:27Participant -> Marla_FYEJust making sure.. the international students pre-orientation date is August 28th right?
Marla_FYE -> ParticpantHi K--International Pre-O arrives on August 24 Here's the link to the schedule Link
May 19, 16:49:14Participant -> Student_KendallHi! I'm from a very temperate part of the west coast (Portland, OR)--any tips on preparing for real seasons/what clothes and equipment are crucial?
Student_Kendall -> ParticpantIt's all about layering and a reliable winter coat!! I also wouldn't be caught without my earmuffs/a hat, mittens, and a SCARF!! I also recommend some sturdy winter boots.
May 19, 16:50:03Student_Kendall -> EveryoneAlso, I loved being thrown into 4 seasons having never experienced them before. Embrace the cold, and you'll be set! It's BEAUTIFUL!
May 19, 16:50:12Particpant -> Panelist(s)For the a capella groups (the audition)-how long do we have to sing for? do we choose the song-or do they? if we get into a group, how time consuming is it? how many times a week do they meet and for how long?
May 19, 16:50:23Participant -> Student_GeorgeHow hard is it to get into a Pre-Orientation trip? If I sign up when registration opens, will I most likely get my first choice?
Student_George -> ParticpantHi Annie! I didn't know so I asked Marla. She said yes! BUT DON'T WAIT! Sign up ASAP.
May 19, 16:50:28Participant -> Marla_FYEHow many courses do I have to take in my first semester?
Marla_FYE -> ParticpantHi Erin,
We recommend taking 15 credits your first semester. Remember that you will be adjusting to Skidmore, so try to be conservative.
May 19, 16:50:32Participant -> Student_LizzieWhat is the food like at skidmore :)
Student_Lizzie -> ParticpantThe food is AMAZING here! No joke. When I was first touring colleges and came to Skidmore, me and my Dad had lunch at Skidmore and he turned to me and said "Buttercup (what he calls me), I don't care if you like it here, the food is delicious you are going here."

Basically you never go hungry. Living in the dorms you get an unlimited meal plan which gives you access to everything from pizza and ice cream to fish and chips (fries) and salads. IT'S SO GOOD!!!!!
May 19, 16:50:41Particpant -> Panelist(s)Is there anywhere to find statistics about our class or are they not available yet?
May 19, 16:50:54Particpant -> Panelist(s)Will this chat remain on screen when done so it can be copied, pasted and saved?
May 19, 16:50:59Particpant -> Panelist(s)[RETURNED]How does one sign up for the pre orientation trips?
May 19, 16:51:05Particpant -> Panelist(s)I'm not planning to be a music major, but I'd love to keep playing the cello--is there a way I could rent one through the school?
May 19, 16:51:12Student_George -> EveryoneNobody knows what fish and chips are, Lizzie.
May 19, 16:51:28Participant -> Student_Emilyso students stay on campus during winter break/spring break?
Student_Emily -> ParticpantHey K! I was on campus for a part of this past winter break participating in a special program offered through our Career Development Center. The dining hall still makes really good food, you still stay in a nice dorm room, and you get to see your school friends for a little bit longer before going home. I would definitely consider staying here over a break again
May 19, 16:51:31Student_Lizzie -> EveryoneGo away, George.
May 19, 16:51:39Particpant -> Panelist(s)In light of the wonderful wonderful food, is there any way to cook for yourself on campus?
May 19, 16:52:33Participant -> Student_KevinFor the a capella groups (the audition)-how long do we have to sing for? do we choose the song-or do they? if we get into a group, how time consuming is it? how many times a week do they meet and for how long?
Student_Kevin -> ParticpantHi Jackie! I was on one of the a cappella groups my freshman year but withdrew when theatre became my real priority. For auditions it's typically a verse and a chorus of a contemporary song of your choice. Callbacks are a different story for each group. Each group rehearses 6 hours a week. There are several groups: one all-male, two all-female, two co-ed, and one all-inclusive. In addition, there is also the gosple choir club. Hope this helps!
May 19, 16:52:45Participant -> Marla_FYEWhat I mean about'how it works' is that why I need to choose top 10 courses?
Marla_FYE -> ParticpantYou need to select ten seminars so that everyone has a fair chance at their top picks. People get their packets at different times, so the Registrar's Office uses a program that randomly places you regardless if you were the first to submit your form or the last to submit your form. I am not sure why it is 10 and not 11 or 7 though.
May 19, 16:52:50Student_Kevin -> EveryoneI HAD FISH AND CHIPS TODAY IN LONDON, ENGLAND.
May 19, 16:53:06Participant -> Student_KendallIf you could provide us with three pieces of advice for College, what would they be?
Student_Kendall -> ParticpantHi Ice! Sorry to be so late in getting this answer back to you...If I could go even further and narrow it down to one piece of advice it would be: give it time!!! College is a huge transition and getting comfortable will take some time. But with patience and perseverance, Skidmore will quickly become a second home.
May 19, 16:53:12Particpant -> Panelist(s)was it easy to make friends while at Skidmore?
May 19, 16:53:44Participant -> Marla_FYEare the housing questionnaires ranked by when they are submitted?
Marla_FYE -> ParticpantHi AJ 14, The housing questionnaires are not ranked by when they are submitted. Just be sure to get it in by the deadline (June 13th).
May 19, 16:53:51Participant -> Student_GeorgeI'm not planning to be a music major, but I'd love to keep playing the cello--is there a way I could rent one through the school?
Student_George -> ParticpantAUDREY!!!! New favorite person here. (Sorry Icy Ice). THATS WHY I CAME HERE! I love playing the cello. Love love love it. But I don't want to do it for the rest of my life. You can absolutely keep playing without being a major. Everything that the music department offers (orchestra, lessons, chamber ensembles) are open to students regardless of major which is awesome. The department does have some instruments that you can rent! GO CELLOS!
May 19, 16:54:12Particpant -> Panelist(s)Do we get a choice between a double or tripple? Or do we get randomly placed?
May 19, 16:54:28Particpant -> Panelist(s)Does skidmore have an on campus gym?
May 19, 16:55:07Participant -> Marla_FYEIs there anywhere to find statistics about our class or are they not available yet?
Marla_FYE -> ParticpantHi Ray_G: Since the enrollment deadline was May 1, we don't have the most recent stats. But you can read this story about the Class of 2018 to get an idea www.skidmore.edu/news/2014/0410-class-of-2018.php
May 19, 16:55:13Participant -> Student_Kendallwas it easy to make friends while at Skidmore?
Student_Kendall -> ParticpantHi littlespoon - yes it was! I almost felt overwhelmed with all of the remarkable individuals I had to choose from. You'll run into people all over the place, from your classes, your seminar, your clubs...what Kevin said :)
May 19, 16:55:26Participant -> Student_LizzieIn light of the wonderful wonderful food, is there any way to cook for yourself on campus?
Student_Lizzie -> Particpanthellllooooo njdh!! There are ways to cook for yourself and I know that although the food here is fantastic there are times when you just want that special something :) If you live in an apartment on campus there is a full kitchen which you can use. If you don't live in an apartment on (or off) campus there is a test kitchen in the dining hall which you can sign out and use!
May 19, 16:55:44Particpant -> Panelist(s)I have heard that Skidmore is a very collaborate college. Can I have an example of how this comes to fruition?
May 19, 16:55:46Participant -> Student_Georgewas it easy to make friends while at Skidmore?
Student_George -> ParticpantHi littlespoon I'm bigspoon. Making friends is incredibly easy! The thing to remember is that everyone is looking to make friends. And everyone makes friends so easily! I don't think this beats Kevin's answer, but yes, making friends is "encouraged". And Kevin loves you.
May 19, 16:55:55Particpant -> Panelist(s)How often did you find to need to visit home during your freshman year? I have zero family in the country sooo...
May 19, 16:56:20Student_Kendall -> EveryoneNjdh - there's also a stovetop in the middle of the dining hall where I make myself tofu scrambles on the reg!
May 19, 16:56:42Particpant -> Panelist(s)Do you ever find yourself pulling all-nighters?
May 19, 16:56:43Participant -> Marla_FYEwas it easy to make friends while at Skidmore?
Marla_FYE -> ParticpantDear Littlespoon, Your Seminar is in place to help with this. You'll have a peer mentor, live with your Seminar,etc.
May 19, 16:57:14Participant -> Student_Emilywas it easy to make friends while at Skidmore?
Student_Emily -> ParticpantLittlespoon, making friends was definitely the thing that stressed me out most before coming to college. What I found to be comforting once I got here was realizing that everyone around you is in the exact same boat. No one feels comfortable. It's almost mathematical, really. You have so many people looking for so many friends at the exact same time that it's almost harder not to make friends than to make them. I tried to be friendly and open when I got to campus and made some friends that I am still really close with.
May 19, 16:57:34Participant -> Student_Lizziewas it easy to make friends while at Skidmore?
Student_Lizzie -> ParticpantDon't you fret littlespoon! Making friends at Skidmore is so easy. Doing a pre-o also helps :) Coming in is scary for everyone but people here are so friendly don't worry! Having an accent didn't hurt either :P

May 19, 16:59:31Participant -> Student_EmilyDoes skidmore have an on campus gym?
Student_Emily -> ParticpantHey, Chickle! Skidmore does have a gym on campus. It's used by a lot of people all the time! We have a huge swimming pool, several weight rooms, a cardio room, couple gyms, and some racquetball and outdoor tennis courts. In the same building we have our dance studios, which is where weekly pilates, zumba, yoga and other exercise classes take place.
May 19, 17:01:35Particpant -> Panelist(s)i know we don't get to choose our roomates, or if we are in a double room or single room, but are we also randomly placed in a building or do we get to choose?
May 19, 17:01:44Participant -> Student_EmilyDo you ever find yourself pulling all-nighters?
Student_Emily -> ParticpantHey, Jackie! I have pulled an all-nighter. It has happened twice. Both times were sad. Typically they happen when I've fallen a little behind in my schoolwork weird how that happens. But seriously, if you stay ahead of or even on top of your work at all times, all-nighters won't be a common event.
May 19, 17:02:06Participant -> Marla_FYEHow does one sign up for the pre orientation trips?
Marla_FYE -> ParticpantHi Noa, The application is available not he pre-o website http://www.skidmore.edu/preorientation/ .
May 19, 17:02:29Participant -> Student_Georgedo freshmen, sophmores, juniors, and seniors all hang out? or do they stick to their class?
Student_George -> ParticpantHey Jackie! There is no freshman specific dorm which is really cool. Most of the time you'll be in a suite with an upperclassmen so you immediately get to know them. Because Skidmore is a relatively small school, everyone gets to know everyone and class year becomes less of a classification of who you are. I would definitely say that we mix it up here.
May 19, 17:02:29Participant -> Student_KendallWhat was your biggest fear entering college and how did it get disproved?
Student_Kendall -> ParticpantHi Ray. Oof...biggest fear...Well, I can tell you that one of my fears was moving so far away from home and not having a support foundation anywhere near me! That's pretty big, right? I cannot say that this fear was disproved right away...I had a hard time adjusting! But by second semester, I had changed my attitude, established a reliable group of friends, and found some sturdy ground to stand on at Skidmore. I guess this fear was disproved with time and personal effort...and lots of phone calls home ;)

May 19, 17:03:29Participant -> Marla_FYEi know we don't get to choose our roomates, or if we are in a double room or single room, but are we also randomly placed in a building or do we get to choose?
Marla_FYE -> ParticpantHi Jackie, You are placed in a residence hall. If you'd like substance free housing or gender neutral housing, these are in specific res. halls.
May 19, 17:03:50Participant -> Student_LizzieHow often did you find to need to visit home during your freshman year? I have zero family in the country sooo...
Student_Lizzie -> ParticpantHey K! I know how this feels :) I am an international student and so my family is far away (an ocean separates me and those crazy Brits)! I only got to go home during my winter and summer breaks. Skidmore really tries to make your experience here the best ever and take special care of those with little or no family in the country. Because I was an international student they gave me a friendship family which is a family who live in downtown Saratoga Springs and become my family while I'm here at Skidmore. They take me out to dinner, they store my stuff over breaks and they make sure that I am looked after and happy. It's basically a second family. She now introduces herself as my American mama. There are times when you may feel homesick but things like Skype, FaceTime, calling cards, anything like that really helps. Don't fret! It may be a little hard at first but with all your new friends, classes and activities going on, there really isn't much time to wish you were anywhere else.

May 19, 17:04:14Participant -> Student_KevinDo you ever find yourselves overwhelmed by the work load, or is it reasonable?
Student_Kevin -> ParticpantYo Christy________B - Yes, I do sometimes find myself overwhelmed by the work load. Rarely, but it does happen. And when I do become overwhelmed, I just pop open a fresh bag of trail mix, do a few tricks with my light-up yo-yo, and buckle down and do the work. Because it has to be done and it's all for the best. But other times, yeah, the workload is mostly pretty reasonable. Cheers.
May 19, 17:05:06Participant -> Student_GeorgeWhich professors are in the highest demand at Skidmore?
Student_George -> ParticpantWelcome back Icy Ice. Don't think you left, but welcome back to my answer I'm taking a class next semester with Tillman Nechtman in the History department and apparently he is one of those "Don't leave Skidmore until you take a class with this guy". Another one is Sheldon Soloman in the psych department. Good luck getting into his classes!
May 19, 17:05:42Student_Emily -> EveryoneHey Jackie! I totally agree with George. I have really close friends in every class year. In my opinion, college is very different than high school. Class year really doesn't matter all that much. For me it feels like people care more about your interests and personality than your age, which is really refreshing.

Student_Lizzie -> ParticpantYo Ice! I have never felt like there is a divide in the student body. I was so nervous about coming to college in America because I was expecting what you see in the movies but this is not true at all! Everyone is so inclusive and friendly here. It's impossible to be friends with everyone but you will always run into people you know or look nice. Seriously. People here are cool. I am living with a girl in the fall who I became friends with because I crashed into her by accident in the hallway one day. I am friends with people who play sports, those who are into art and those who like to kick back and watch a movie and just chill :)

Also, there is a bike room that is only accessible by key swipe so if you bring a bike there is a safe place to put it on campus. I love biking!!!WOOOO

(one of my...)Fav Social memories: One day this past winter my friends and I were feeling restless so we took to Northwoods to go sledding! We had to make our own path...we were out there for HOURS! But it was tons and tons of fun and I can't wait to do it again next winter (something to look forward to when it gets cold! that's important!)

Student_Lizzie -> ParticpantHey Jackie_Groarke! I had to share a bathroom with 6 other girls and it's seriously not that big of a deal. At first it's a little stressful when you're learning each others schedules but after a week or so you really develop a routine :) Some people shower in the mornings, some in the evenings, I'm not kidding one of the girls I shared a bathroom with showered at 3am every single day. No exceptions. 3am!

You can also have a TV or do what I did and rig up a projector. I watched my Rangers kick the Habs butts on 80 inches of dorm room wall on Saturday. Tell me you're a Rangers fan!

Student_Emily -> ParticpantHey Hongqiao! I'm a double major in Psychology and Dance. Yes, the studio arts and performing arts at Skidmore are incredible, but the sciences and social sciences are extremely strong, as well. I don't know too too much about anthropology, history, sociology or departments like that, but I can tell you that the psychology department is full of amazing professors and faculty members who are willing to work with you in any way. They're also incredibly passionate about what they're teaching, which is so great to see and be around.

SO GOOD! There is always a vegetarian pizza option as well! You can have sandwiches too :) If you really want you can eat ice cream for every meal :) my favorite thing to do until my mama found out and yelled at me haha!
May 19, 17:19:40Participant -> Student_GeorgeIf we want to get a job on campus but we are not in a work study program do we apply over the summer or wait until we are on campus?
Student_George -> ParticpantHey rwales. I think you can look on the website and look at some of the jobs that are offered. I would guess that next academic year jobs aren't posted yet, but you can definitely take a look. Likely, most of the jobs that aren't the dining hall will be filled up by upperclassmen so you might end up working in the dining hall anyway. But you're welcome to apply! Here is a link to the student employment page for your viewing pleasure. https://skidmore.studentemployment.ngwebsolutions.com
May 19, 17:20:41Participant -> Student_EmilyAre there skiing trips planned by students? Or by the college? For spring break, do students go off to Rio, or Punta Cana in a group?
Student_Emily -> ParticpantHey Jackie! I'm not much of a skier, but I know that the Outing club (one of Skidmore's consistently most popular clubs) is always organizing outdoor events. Our campus is only 20 miles from the base of the Adirondacks, so there's an incredible amount of hiking, canoeing, biking, camping, and swimming to be done. In the winter I know that they plan ski trips and tubing trips. A couple months ago, I went tubing for the first time through a Skidmore-planned event and had a blast!

May 19, 17:24:11Participant -> Student_KendallDoes Skidmore have "snow days". If so, do teacher's send work by e-mail? Or do they have a giant skype session?
Student_Kendall -> ParticpantHi Jackie! We rarely have snow days at Skidmore since the campus is so well-equipped to handle snow...which is great because we get the academic rigor we signed up for! Funny, though, is you'll find Skidkids taking to Facebook to complain about how "all the other schools have the day off," while we have to, quite literally, plow throw. That being said, if Professors live far, and the roads are in bad shape, they'll shoot you and your classmates and email as late as an hour before class to cancel. Different professors will have different policies about how work for the day will be made up. Some say c'est la vie, others will assign extra work. No giant Skype sessions as far as I know! That would be neat, though!

To be less blunt, it can be hard sometimes, but if you put a little bit of work into managing your social life and your academic life, everything will happen in its time. It all works out.
XOXO.
May 19, 17:28:46Participant -> Student_KendallIs it hard to balance school and all the other things happening on campus?
Student_Kendall -> ParticpantHi Jackie! Just the fact that you're asking this question makes me think you'll have a good handle on things - you're thinking proactively! Sometimes it's a balancing act, but a lot of the times school and non-school will overlap. There's always times for extracurriculars, if that's what you're worried about. Just don't overcommit and you'll have no trouble.

May 19, 17:30:09Participant -> Student_EmilyIs it hard to balance school and all the other things happening on campus?
Student_Emily -> ParticpantJack-ster! Balancing schoolwork and social life and fun things is definitely a challenge at first. It was probably the aspect of college that took me the longest to adjust to. I guess what I would want to hear if I were in your shoes right now is: The social life will always be there. There will always be people to see and things to be doing (most of which are probably more fun than school work). However, making time for your school work is equally as important as it used to be, even though there's a lot more fun things to do 24/7.

May 19, 17:31:41Participant -> Student_GeorgeDo I have to bring my own saxophone or guitar or can I rent one on campus?
Student_George -> ParticpantHi Erin! If you can, definitely bring your own instrument. There are lockers in the music building so you'll have a place to store it. Which is great so I don't have to drag my cello across campus. I'm not sure if the department has instruments to rent, but I'm sure they'd be able to find you an instrument if you really couldn't bring them. Go musicians!
May 19, 17:31:48Participant -> Student_LizzieIs it hard to balance school and all the other things happening on campus?
Student_Lizzie -> ParticpantOh Jackie, don't you worry girl! Although everything may seem a little overwhelming at first, it's really not that hard. You'll very quickly establish a routine and there is always time attend that event that you really want to see. There will always be professors and other students who are willing to help. So in short, no, it's not that hard. Just do you and you'll be grand! :)
May 19, 17:32:51Participant -> Student_Kendallwhat is the lowest and highest degree in winter and summer?
Student_Kendall -> ParticpantHmm...you might have to take to google for exact numbers. I think the lowest it got this winter might have been -15F...we had one weird "hot" day when it was around 40f...people were craving out the shorts!

May 19, 17:36:40Participant -> Student_GeorgeWould I be able to take lessons and participate in a band or orchestra without majoring in music? I play the oboe.
Student_George -> ParticpantYES YES YES. Coolest thing about the department is you can do anything without being a major. You can take lessons, join the orchestra, join small chamber groups, or do all of them without being a major. We also just lost an oboist so we'll love to have you!

Student_Emily -> ParticpantHey Beny! Intramurals are a great way to be involved with sports but not at a varsity level. Its awesome to not have the commitment level that comes along with a varsity sport. I'm not sure if Volleyball and Soccer are offered as intramurals, but I'm sure you can find it on the website somewhere. 75% of students are involved in intramurals so I definitely recommend getting involved! Also George answered this question because he is better than me.

May 19, 17:44:35Participant -> Student_KendallWhat's something you wish you had known as a freshman? Or something you regretted not doing earlier?
Student_Kendall -> ParticpantExcellent question, Stew. I wish I had known, or at least been more comfortable with the fact, that it's okay to do your own thing! It's easy to get swept away with all of the cool, fun stuff Skidmore has to offer, but it's also very important to take some time to breathe...maybe go on a hike, or read a book in your window seat. Solitude does not have to mean loneliness....I wish I had embraced that idea earlier! On a more superficial level, I wish I had taken more advantage of the test kitchen and the stove in shall earlier than I did. And the awesome equipment at the gym!
May 19, 17:45:14Participant -> Student_LizzieWhat do you like most about campus at skid
Student_Lizzie -> ParticpantHey Chickle :) I think the thing I like most about campus at skid is the covered walkways. I know that seems odd but to be honest if it is raining, snowing or super sunny (and you need some shade) this is one of the best things. You can always get to all the essential places on campus, the dining hall, your classes and of course your room!
May 19, 17:45:53Particpant -> Panelist(s)Hi! I just took a gap year. I was wondering if many people do that before heading to Skidmore
May 19, 17:46:05Participant -> Student_GeorgeIs there anything you would recommend bringing for the dorms that isn't on the basic packing list?
Student_George -> ParticpantHey rwales. Definitely take a mirror. Looking at yourself is always fun. And because Emily foolishly gave you an item that is already on the list, I'll give you a second. Command strips, tacks or putty. Decorating your room is a great way to make yourself feel at home. Throw some posters on the wall.
May 19, 17:46:43Participant -> Marla_FYEDo you live with the same 15 people from the Scriber seminars for 4 years in the same dorm? Do you have the same advisor from the seminar for 4 years? Can you tell me how the seminar work? Is it mostly lecture or discussions? How does the big group like Human Dilimar work?
Marla_FYE -> ParticpantDear Kit, You do not live with the same 15 people in the same dorm for 4 years. After your first year, you will participate in room draw and be able to select room, roommate, res. hall. You'll have your Scribner Seminar faculty member as your advisor until you declare your major. When you declare your major, you'll switch advisors. Seminars depend on the instructor, but they are geared toward discussions. Human Dilemmas has a lecture once a week with all sections and then you divide into smaller discussion sections.
May 19, 17:47:04Participant -> Student_EmilyWhat do you like most about campus at skid
Student_Emily -> ParticpantI think my favorite thing about Skidmore is the overall appearance. I think it's just a really beautiful campus. Especially in the summer when everything is green and gorgeous and Saratoga is bustling. It's just a really exciting place to be!
May 19, 17:47:19Particpant -> Panelist(s)What is your least favorite thing about Skidmore?
May 19, 17:47:24Participant -> Student_GeorgeWhat do you like most about campus at skid
Student_George -> Particpantchickle chickle chickle. Its fun to say chickle. It makes me chuckle. It's hard to pinpoint something I like the most. For me, it was my opportunity to double major. They make it so easy and I would definitely recommend it!
May 19, 17:47:34Participant -> Student_KendallWhat do you like most about campus at skid
Student_Kendall -> ParticpantThat's a tough one, chikle. well...I like how I can run into a bunch of people I know just walking from the library to the post office, but how I'm also just as likely to do that walk without running into anyone. It's as easy to find people as it is to get away. Northwoods is a wonderful place to walk through and such a great thing to have nearby. The pond, too, is just lovely. Skidmore has such a beautiful campus! I love the landscaping and that there's nature everywhere! I'm not used to that coming from LA
May 19, 17:47:34Particpant -> Panelist(s)I'm a Harry Potter fan and I happened to see the Quidditch club. Later I found out it's actually a sport club. Do you know something about it?
May 19, 17:48:29Participant -> Student_GeorgeWhat is your least favorite thing about Skidmore?
Student_George -> ParticpantThe winters are long. But if you come prepared you'll be fine!
May 19, 17:49:05Participant -> Student_LizzieIs there anything you would recommend bringing for the dorms that isn't on the basic packing list?
Student_Lizzie -> Particpantrwales! Snacks are a must! My first semester here I was convinced I didn't need any snacks because of the unlimited meal plan but there are always times when you want those extra few minutes in bed and so having something to grab is great. Also for some reason when you come to college you always seem to get hungry and the oddest times and you wake up at 3am starving or if you're watching a movie and want something to nibble having snacks can be great :)
May 19, 17:49:15Participant -> Student_KendallIs there anything you would recommend bringing for the dorms that isn't on the basic packing list?
Student_Kendall -> ParticpantI think you already got some great answers for this, RWales! Personally, I bring an excessive amount of blankets to snuggle up with in the winter and to decorate my window seat.
May 19, 17:49:52Particpant -> Panelist(s)Thanks George....and Emily :) Do you know what the registration process is for intramural sports? I'm slightly confused by the website :S
May 19, 17:51:02Participant -> Student_GeorgeI'm a Harry Potter fan and I happened to see the Quidditch club. Later I found out it's actually a sport club. Do you know something about it?
Student_George -> ParticpantHey Hongqiao. I'm not on the Quidditch team, but I know who started it! It is a club on campus which means you can basically go whenever you want. You'll learn the rules, go to practices, and occasionally travel to other schools to compete. Skidmore actually hosted a Quidditch tournament last semester. Anything you want to know specifically? Allison Teevan co-founded the club. She just graduated but I'm sure she'd be happy to answer your questions! Her email is ateevan@skidmore.edu
May 19, 17:51:03Particpant -> Panelist(s)Does skidmore have activities about musicals? You know, like Cats, The Phantom of the Opera. I'm also a huge musical fan. I hope that there can be something like going to Broadway to see shows.
May 19, 17:51:45Participant -> Student_KendallWhat is your least favorite thing about Skidmore?
Student_Kendall -> ParticpantHmm....that I don't have enough time to take all of the classes I want to?! I'm not sure, Noa! I suppose if I had to choose one thing, it would be that I wish I had had more help in deciding/planning a semester abroad. I think I'm not the popular opinion with that one though. It is difficult to go abroad as an Education Major.
May 19, 17:52:15Participant -> Student_EmilyHi! I just took a gap year. I was wondering if many people do that before heading to Skidmore
Student_Emily -> ParticpantHi! One of my really close friends took a gap year both before and after her freshman year of college. She's the age of a senior, but she's my year (a rising junior). She says that it's not a difficult transition to jump back into school after taking time off, and she said it was incredibly easy to make new friends and rekindle things with old friends. She's the only good friend of mine who has taken a gap year, but she's not the only person I know who has.
May 19, 17:52:52Participant -> Student_GeorgeThanks George....and Emily :) Do you know what the registration process is for intramural sports? I'm slightly confused by the website :S
Student_George -> ParticpantHey Beny. From what we understand, you'll get an email from a team captain that will allow you sign up. Sorry we're not too helpful for this one. If you see an email on the athletics page, I'm sure you can email them and ask.
May 19, 17:53:32Participant -> Student_LizzieWhat is your least favorite thing about Skidmore?
Student_Lizzie -> ParticpantMy friend Noa :) There are very few things that I would change about Skidmore. If I had to pick my least favorite things I think they would be the snow (snow is fun but after a while it's just too snowy) and also registering for classes can be frustrating at times
May 19, 17:53:40Particpant -> Panelist(s)No worries, thanks for your help! This has been great.
May 19, 17:54:26Particpant -> Panelist(s)What's the easiest way to travel to New York city from Skidmore?
May 19, 17:54:55Skidmore -> EveryoneFive more minutes left. Please submit your final questions now!
May 19, 17:55:34Participant -> Student_LizzieNo worries, thanks for your help! This has been great.
Student_Lizzie -> ParticpantYAY!
May 19, 17:56:16Particpant -> Panelist(s)Hello, I know I joined up late but if any of the current students can advise me on bringing camera gear. I'm a big photographer and was wondering if there is locked equipment storage or whether you just keep it in your room or how it goes? Thanks!
May 19, 17:56:18Particpant -> Panelist(s)Does the Skidmore professor grade tough? I read the Rate my Professor page and it seems a lot of professors grade hard!
May 19, 17:56:27Participant -> Student_KendallNo worries, thanks for your help! This has been great.
Student_Kendall -> ParticpantGlad we could help :) If any other questions arise, feel free to ask Kevin or me on the FB page for Class of 2018ers!
May 19, 17:57:01Particpant -> Panelist(s)Just want to thank all of you! Great information!
May 19, 17:57:27Participant -> Student_GeorgeWhat's the easiest way to travel to New York city from Skidmore?
Student_George -> ParticpantHey Remorse! Thats weird to say Saratoga has an Amtrak station right in town that will take you to the city. There is also a Peter Pan, Greyhound, and Megabus stop right in town. I've been told that if you get tickets enough in advance, you can get tickets to the City for 1$. Albany is also very close so you can hop on a quick flight. But that seems a bit excessive. Very easy to travel!
May 19, 17:57:39Particpant -> Panelist(s)Thanks you guys! You help me a lot! Now I have no questions and I can't wait to share your lovely answers with my skidmore 2018er classmates in China!
May 19, 17:57:46Particpant -> Panelist(s)Are the dorms well air conditioned during the summer?
May 19, 17:58:51Participant -> Student_KendallDoes the Skidmore professor grade tough? I read the Rate my Professor page and it seems a lot of professors grade hard!
Student_Kendall -> ParticpantHi Kit! It depends on which professors you have and which courses you take. It may seem like they are grading more rigorously if the course presents more of a challenge, but in my experience so far, all of my professors have graded very fairly.
May 19, 17:59:07Participant -> Student_GeorgeHello, I know I joined up late but if any of the current students can advise me on bringing camera gear. I'm a big photographer and was wondering if there is locked equipment storage or whether you just keep it in your room or how it goes? Thanks!
Student_George -> ParticpantHey Sjar. Glad to have ya. I would say the safest place to keep it is in your room. Your room is locked at all times so it will be safe in there. Media Services will also rent equipment out like tripods and cameras which is great. Definitely look into the student photographer job. The school is always looking for you guys!
May 19, 17:59:11Participant -> Student_LizzieAre the dorms well air conditioned during the summer?
Student_Lizzie -> ParticpantNot all the dorms have air conditioning so I really recommend bringing a fan or two (or three if you want) just in case you get one that doesn't! Setting them up by your window really helps get that cool breeze coming through
May 19, 17:59:13Participant -> Student_GeorgeJust want to thank all of you! Great information!
Student_George -> ParticpantNo problem Kit!
May 19, 17:59:35Participant -> Student_GeorgeThanks you guys! You help me a lot! Now I have no questions and I can't wait to share your lovely answers with my skidmore 2018er classmates in China!
Student_George -> ParticpantThanks Hongqiao!!! See you in a few months!
May 19, 17:59:38Participant -> Student_EmilyDoes skidmore have activities about musicals? You know, like Cats, The Phantom of the Opera. I'm also a huge musical fan. I hope that there can be something like going to Broadway to see shows.
Student_Emily -> ParticpantHey! Skidmore does have activities about musicals! It's called Cabaret Troupe! And we love them! They put on a show or two every semester. We don't have a musical theater department, but we do have theater department which offers a 1-credit course every semester (called Theater Company) that meets for an hour every week to talk about shows that are being performed on and around campus. Being enrolled in this class helps you become as involved as you'd like to be in the theater department in terms of ushering, set design, set building, acting, script writing, or even assisting with casting and directing. I don't know too much about the theater department, but I do know that the dance department is very adamant about making sure all dance majors are constantly exposing themselves to new artists, venues, and styles. Skidmore is very supportive of the arts, so if you were to join the Cabaret Troupe, I'm sure figuring out field trips and expenses would be totally doable.
May 19, 17:59:43Particpant -> Panelist(s)Perfect thanks!
