February 23, 2003 Dear Skidmore Faculty Member: The Fifth Annual Academic Festival will kick off on April 29 and run through the afternoon of April 30. Periclean Honor Society, Honors Forum, and the Student Government Association are pleased to be jointly sponsoring this year’s Festival. Academic Festival provides students from all class years an opportunity to display significant projects to the College community, and it gives the community an excellent occasion to honor publicly the creative and intellectual endeavors of our most talented students. We anticipate a very special festival, packed with academic activities of all kinds taking place in every corner of the campus. We are planning an event that engages the entire student body, faculty, and staff. While sponsored by Honors Forum, Periclean and SGA, the Academic Festival is open to all Skidmore students to participate. We hope for the broadest possible student representation across the curriculum with presenters from the visual and performing arts, the sciences, humanities, social sciences, and pre-professional areas. Likewise, we welcome a broad range of presentation formats: poster sessions, paper readings, panels, experiments, computer programs, performances (music, theater, creative writing, dance) and exhibitions. As to this year’s nomination process, we are again asking for either departmental or faculty nominations of students or groups of students. Students will be approaching either department chairs or faculty members for a supporting nomination. In the interest of attracting sufficient numbers and diversity of presentations, we would like at least one nomination from each department or program. Remember, this is an opportunity to showcase the very best of our students’ achievements and talents. The compressed length of this year’s Festival means that there will be somewhat of a premium on the number of presentations. Therefore, we ask that you nominate those proposals that represent the best student work in your department. Deadline for submitting nominations is March 31. The application is available online here. If you have questions about the nominating process or thoughts about this year’s Academic Festival, please contact a member of the Planning Committee. With your support, enthusiasm, and suggestions, we can make the Fifth Annual Academic Festival a memorable, inspiring, and festive way for the Skidmore community to end classes for the 2002-2031 academic year. Sincerely, 2000-2001 Academic Festival Planning Committee Adam Abramowitz ’01, Vice-president
