This web page was developed in support of the 1999-2001 Department of Education Title VI-A grant for the International Affairs/Environmental Studies project at Skidmore College. The project allowed the International Affairs Program and the Environmental Studies Program to collaborate to help students study the technical and political aspects of environmental policy, equipping students with the knowledge and skills that afford the beginning of informed work in environmental issues. Toward that end, this web page provides links to print and electronic resources available at Scribner Library and beyond. Access to some materials may be restricted to Skidmore community users only.

The 1999-2001 Department of Education Title VI-A grant provided Scribner Library with funds to acquire materials in support of the International Affairs/Environmental Studies project. The materials acquired include the Columbia Earthscape online resource on the global environment, the Corporate Environmental Profiles Database, the Encyclopedia of Biodiversity, and the periodical Environmental Politics. Environmental Health Perspectives. From 1993-2002 EHP also published supplements, peer-reviewed monographs on current environmental topics and an annual review of environmental health.

A project of the North American Association for Environmental Education, ee-link provides environmental education resources on the Internet. Aimed primarily at k-12 teachers, though the Environmental Links to general environmental information sources arranged by subject are relevant and useful for students and faculty in higher education.

Project on Teaching Global Environmental Politics
A forum for teacher-scholars of global environmental politics (GEP) to share information and questions about research and teaching in the field. The web site provides an archive of syllabi, course material, web-pages, and other resources that were posted to or announced on the GEP list.

National Library for the Environment
A universal, timely, and easy-to-use single-point entry to environmental information and data for the use of all participants in the environmental enterprise. This online library includes directories of academic environmental programs, journals, funding sources, meetings, job opportunities, news sources, laws and treaties, reports, reference materials, and more.

 

Governmental Sites

EPA
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's mission is to protect human health and to safeguard the natural environment — air, water, and land — upon which life depends. The web page includes such useful components as Terms of the Environment, commonly used environmental terms, acronyms and abbreviations within the Agency; Policy Statements and Strategy Documents; National Environmental Publications Internet Site (NEPIS), EPA's largest electronic documents site allows you to search view and print, including full images of all original pages and full-text, from a collection of over 7,000 archival and current documents.

NTIS: Environment
The National Technical Information Service (NTIS) is the central information source for more than 80,000 environmental-related publications produced by U.S. Government agencies since 1990. These agencies include EPA, NASA, Department of Energy, and Department of Defense. On the NTIS Web site, you can search the Technical Reports Database, which covers 1990 to the present or browse the Environment section.

 

International Sites

CEC
The Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) is an international organization whose members include Canada, Mexico and the United States. The CEC was created under the North American Agreement for Environmental Cooperation (NAAEC) to address regional environmental concerns, help prevent potential trade and environmental conflicts and promote the effective enforcement of environmental law. The Agreement complements the environmental provisions established in the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Text available in French, Spanish or English.

European Environment Agency
Europe's gateway to environmental information.

European Environment Information and Observation NETwork (EIONET)
The EIONET site is generally organized by country, the National Focal Points which includes National Resource Centers and European Topic Centres, and by subject, the Topics section.

United Nations Environment Programme
The UNEP was established as the environmental conscience of the United Nations system, and has been creating a basis for comprehensive consideration and coordinated action within the UN on the problems of the human environment.

 

Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs)

Conservation International Foundation
CI focuses on trying to preserve and promote awareness about the world's most endangered biodiversity through scientific programs, local awareness campaigns, and economic initiatives. CI also works with multinational institutions, provides economic analyses for national leaders, and promotes "best practices" that allow for sustainable development.

The Earth Council
The Earth Council is an international non-governmental organization (NGO) created in September 1992 to promote and advance the implementation of the Earth Summit agreements. It is led by a body of 18 Members, drawn from the world's political, business, scientific and non-governmental communities. Sixteen eminent world leaders serve as Honorary Members, and an 18 member Earth Council Institute functions as an advisory board.

EnviroLink
EnviroLink is a non-profit organization providing comprehensive, up-to-date environmental resources by topic or categories.

EDF
The Environmental Defense Fund is a non-profit organization since 1967. It seeks to find solutions to environmental problems through science, economics, and law.

Friends of the Earth International
A group of autonomous environmental organisations from all over the world.

Greenpeace
Greenpeace is a global environmental campaigning organization.

Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC)
The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) website provides a comprehensive environmental perspective on what's happening in the world today. You'll find everything environmental on NRDC's website, from quick overviews and fun features to in-depth technical materials. The hundreds of resources include news, legislative updates, scientific research, policy analyses and an action center that makes it easy to make your voice heard. Among NRDC's fun features: an environmental calendar with new (and free) wallpaper every month, an environmental timeline and interactive "Creature Closeups."

Sierra Club
One of the largest and well known environmental grassroots organizations.

The World's Water
Information on the world's freshwater resources compiled by Peter H. Gleick, includes a water conflict chronology and a fairly comprehensive set of links to water resources. A companion print volume is available in Scribner Library's reference collection, TD345 .W674 2004/05.

WWF - The Conservation Organization
Formerly known as the World Wildlife Fund, WWF is one of the world's largest and most experienced independent conservation organizations.
