*Record type: A citation provides basic bibliographic information about an article (the title, author, date, page, source journal, etc.). You can then use this information to locate the article either in print on the library's ground floor, or in electronic format through full text providers like JSTOR or Project Muse. An abstract is a short summary of the article's contents or main points. Full text records provide you with the complete text of the article itself in addition to citation information.

**The use of truncation and wildcards can expand your search results by allowing you to search for multiple variants of a word and/or by allowing you to search for words for which you are unsure of the spelling.  For example, a search for colon* in Sociological Abstracts will bring results including the words colony, colonial, colonialism, colonization, etc. A search for wom?n will bring results including the words woman or women.
