Disabled parking is available
on the north side of the building. All business services are on
the main floor, which is wheelchair-accessible. The Barrett Conference
Room, which is commonly used for business meetings, is not accessible.
Skidmore Travel is located on
the lower floor. Since the building has no internal elevator,
an exterior ramp to the lower level has been provided along the
west side of the building.
History
The building is named for G.
Hinman Barrett. A nephew of College founder Lucy Scribner Skidmore,
Barrett was twice awarded the Croix de Guerre as a volunteer
ambulance driver during World War I. Returning from France, he
served as treasurer and College trustee from 1919 to 1969a
50-year period that spanned the tenures of four Skidmore presidents.
Part of the original campus
design, Barrett was intended as the reception center and meeting
space for the Keyes Quad of residence halls (Howe, Rounds, Jonsson,
and Wait). When the campus became coeducational, there was no
further need for such spaces, and the building was converted into
administrative offices. You can still see relics of its originally
intended role in the large fireplace that dominates the Barrett
Conference Room.
