The building houses a wide array of specialized resources for the sciences, including a full machine shop, greenhouse, aviary, and electron microscope.
Disabled parking is available in the Palamountain lot along the north side of the building. The building is fully wheelchair-accessible.
The building is in two parts. The original Dana Science Center stretches along an east-west axis and houses most of the faculty offices and laboratory classrooms. In 1997, an extension was added along a north-south axis, between the original building and Harder Hall. The new wing includes the Dana atrium, department offices, and additional classroom and laboratory space. The building is named
for Charles Dana, a noted philanthropist whose foundation provided
key support for its construction. Dana was a successful businessman,
lawyer, and early political supporter of Theodore Roosevelt, and
he frequently emulated Roosevelt's combination of civic leadership
and the rigorous enjoyment of country living. Dana believed strongly
in the value of small colleges, and said, "I think students
in the small college understand life more. Life at a small college
broadens them, and they study harder."
