Scribner Village Apartments

Scribner Village is a cluster of student apartments along the west side of campus. Each building is divided into four apartments that typically include four bedrooms, a common lounge, kitchen, and bathroom.

Seniors are the main Village residents.

Three clusters are named for former deans (Ross, Bridgman, and MacRury), with the others named for a various native trees (Oak, Birch, Dogwood, Ash, Poplar, Hemlock, Elm, Pine, and Hickory).

Disability Access

Most of the Scribner Village Apartments are not accessible. While wheelchairs can reach the main-floor common areas, most bedrooms are on the second floor, without elevators or ramps.

History

Opened in 1973, the village was designed to bring together the independence of apartment living with the convenience of on-campus residences.

Sarah Gridley Ross served as dean of the College from 1915 to 1929. She presided over the
institution's transition from a school of arts into a college, and she was remembered as a wonderful mentor and guide for a whole generation of students.

Bridgman House is named for Margaret Bridgman, who served as dean of the College from 1929 to 1949. Afterward, she launched a second career as a national spokesperson for better professional education for nursing students.

Norma MacRury succeeded Bridgman as dean in 1949, serving the College until her retirement in 1970. As a former professor of French, she had a special interest in increasing Skidmore's access to foreign students, as well as promoting study-abroad programs for American students.
