Accelerator Series #6: Memory and Monuments: (Re-) Claiming Public Space
Time: 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM
TANG Payne: On Monday, February 26, at 6:00 pm, join Tang Curator-at-Large Isolde Brielmaier as she moderates a discussion about memory, monuments, and public spaces with artist and Director of Exhibitions at the Harvard Graduate School of Design Dan Borelli, painter and sculptor Titus Kaphar, and sculptor and installation artist Karyn Olivier. This event is free and open to the public. About the SpeakersDan Borelli is an artist and Director of Exhibitions at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. In 2010, as part of his Master studies at the GSD, he started an art-based research inquiry into the Nyanza Superfund Site in his hometown, Ashland, Massachusetts. His project makes public hidden narratives of cancer clusters, human loss, activism, and ultimately regeneration. With the support of Harvard Innovation Learning Technology, ArtPlace America and NEA Our Town grants, he created an exhibition at the town’s public library that housed the EPA’s field repository on the site, a streetlighting intervention to illuminate the groundwater contamination below the town today, and a permanent public space, The Ashland Memorial Healing Garden. Titus Kaphar is an artist whose work interacts with the history of art by appropriating its styles and mediums through painting and sculpture, and then altering the work in a nod to hidden narratives and unspoken truths about the nature of history. Kaphar received an MFA from the Yale School of Art and is received the Gwendolyn Knight and Jacob Lawrence Fellowship. His work has been exhibited at Savannah College of Art and Design, the Studio Museum in Harlem, and the Seattle Art Museum. His work is included in the collections of the New Britain Museum of American Art, the Seattle Art Museum, the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art. He has been awarded the 2015 Creative Capital Fellowship and the 2016 Artist as Activist Rauschenberg Foundation Fellowship. Kaphar was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and lives and works in New Haven, Connecticut. Karyn Olivier is a sculptor and installation artist. In 2017, Olivier installed a large-scale commissioned work for Philadelphia’s Mural Arts program in historic Vernon Park. In 2015 Olivier created public works for Creative Time in Central Park and NYC’s Percent for Art program. Her work has been exhibited at the Gwangju and Busan Biennials, World Festival of Black Arts and Culture (Dakar, Senegal), The Studio Museum in Harlem, The Whitney Museum of Art, MoMA P.S.1, among others. She is the recipient of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, the Joan Mitchell Foundation Award, the New York Foundation for the Arts Award, a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant, the William H. Johnson Prize, the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Biennial Award, a Creative Capital Foundation grant and a Harpo Foundation grant. Olivier was born in Trinidad and Tobago, earned her MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art and her BA at Dartmouth College, and is an associate professor and program head of sculpture at Tyler School of Art. About the Accelerator Series The Accelerator Series is the Tang Teaching Museum’s dynamic conversation series on big ideas and big issues that seeks to find new entry points into discussions that veer from traditional paths. As an open and inclusive public forum for dialogue, exchange and questioning, the Accelerator Series ignites a collective sense of intellectual curiosity and fosters thoughtful engagement with a deeper understanding of compelling issues that have the potential to spark radical transformations. The series features key cultural influencers from the arts and culture sector as well as academia, entertainment, government, journalism, media, politics and beyond, who present new perspectives and disrupt the status quo by encouraging a “getting comfortable with discomfort” attitude in order to think and work through big ideas it to drive change. The Accelerator Series is supported by Accelerate: Access and Inclusion at the Tang Teaching Museum, a project of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and by a generous gift from Michele Dunkerley '80. MDOCS Workshop: Oral History
Time: 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM
LIB Meeting Room-417: What is Oral History and What is It Good For? In our storytelling-obsessed era, what does oral history offer to researchers, artists, students, organizers, journalists, public historians and teachers? In this interactive workshop, participants will be introduced to the basics of oral history practice -- planning a project, conducting an interview, and curating oral histories for the public – and will explore how tools from the oral historian’s toolkit can be useful to their practice. Participants will get hands-on practice in oral history interviewing, a crash course in broadcast-quality audio recording, and an introduction to oral history ethics, best practices and technological tools.Amy Starecheski, Co-Director of the Oral History MA Program at Columbia University, is a cultural anthropologist and oral historian whose research focuses on the use of oral history in social movements and the politics of urban property. She was a lead interviewer on Columbia’s September 11, 2001 Narrative and Memory Project, for which she interviewed Afghans, Muslims, Sikhs, activists, low-income people, and the unemployed. Starecheski is a member of the Core Working Group for Groundswell: Oral History for Social Change, where she facilitates the Practitioner Support Network. In 2015 she won the Oral History Association’s article award for “Squatting History: The Power of Oral History as a History-Making Practice” and in 2016 she was awarded the Sapiens-Allegra “Will the Next Margaret Mead Please Stand Up?” prize for public anthropological writing. She received a PhD in cultural anthropology from the CUNY Graduate Center, where she was a Public Humanities Fellow. Her book, Ours to Lose: When Squatters Became Homeowners in New York City, was published in 2016 by the University of Chicago Press. Columbia University’s Oral History Master of Arts Program is the first program of its kind in the United States: a one-year interdisciplinary MA degree training students in oral history method and theory.

Everything You Touch
Time: 8:00 PM
JKB Black Box: By Sheila CallaghanDirected by Rachel Karp '18Two worlds unfurl simultaneously: the fashion world of the 1970s and contemporary Manhattan. Though separated by three decades, both are shaped by the desire for perfect careers, perfect bodies, and perfect lives. In the 1970s, Victor, a designer, and Esme, his muse, are immersed in their quest for beauty, art, and the ever-elusive idealized versions of themselves. That is, until Louella comes along, a shockingly ordinary woman from Arkansas who inspires Victor to cast Esme aside and make his clothing accessible to the people. In the present day, Jess embarks on a cross-country road trip to see her estranged, dying mother one last time, with a stranger named Victor who may or may not be the imaginary reincarnation of her father. Along the way, she is forced to consider her own body-image, fraught with the self-hatred she has inherited from her mother and her world.
Moseley Faculty Lecture
Time: 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM
PALMTN Gannett Auditorium: Galaxies in the 21st Century The discovery of galaxies as immense “island universes” a hundred years ago propelled a revolution in our understanding of the cosmos. We now find ourselves in an expanding universe of trillions of galaxies connected by a vast cosmic web —a universe where primordial hydrogen gas is gradually converted into stars and planets with the potential to host life. Equally amazing, the methods of astronomical discovery allow us to use outer space as an enormous laboratory to study conditions too extreme for any terrestrial experiment. In this lecture, I will argue that a particularly important shift in our understanding is that we can actually no longer consider galaxies to be isolated island universes; to understand them, we must consider their interactions with the invisible web of matter than joins them all together. The annual Edwin M. Moseley Faculty Research Lecture highlights compelling, original research in scholarly and creative work, and is the highest honor the Skidmore faculty can confer upon one of their peers. Mary Crone Odekon is Professor of Physics and Kenan Chair of Liberal Arts at Skidmore College, where she studies the formation of galaxies and large-scale structure in the universe. She has approached this problem using computer simulations as well as data from a variety of telescopes, including the Hubble Space Telescope and the Arecibo Radio Observatory. She has published dozens of peer-reviewed articles and is currently funded by the National Science Foundation. Dr. Odekon teaches across the curriculum at Skidmore, having developed over twenty distinct courses. She served as Chair of the Physics Department for nine years, and has been on many major committees, including Skidmore’s Committee on Appointments, Promotion, and Tenure. She is currently serving on the Lever Press Editorial Board, the Education Board of the American Astronomical Society, and the Board of the New York Astronomical Corporation. She received her B.S from the College of William and Mary and her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.

TANG Somers: Staring Back at the Sun: Video Art from Israel, 1970-2012 is a two-night video exhibition that traces the development of contemporary video practice in Israel and highlights work by artists who take an incisive, critical perspective toward the cultural and political landscape in Israel and beyond. Staring Back at the Sunshowcases 35 works by 38 artists, including early performances, films and videos never before presented outside of Israel. Divided into four historic and thematic sections, Staring Back at the Sun focuses on the activist impulse in video art-making in Israel over the last four decades. Join us on Wednesday, March 21, at 6:00 pm, for the first night of the exhibition, curated by Ilana Tenenbaum, featuring 14 works under the heading Part 1: 1970–80—Early Experiments in Time-Based Art and 7 works under the heading Part 2: 1980–97—An Art Form Coming Into Its Own. The second night, Thursday, March 22, features Part 3: 1997–2005—The Rise of the Medium, 6 works curated by Sergio Edelsztein, and Part 4: 2005–12—State of Amnesia: Recent Video from Israel, 8 works curated by Yael Bartana and Avi Feldman. Informed by the international history of video art, the program traces the development of the medium in Israel and explores how artists have employed technology and material to examine the sociopolitical status quo. Feldman is an independent curator and writer based in Tel Aviv, Berlin, and Dresden. PALMTN Davis Auditorium: FREE TO ROCK is a documentary film directed by 4-time Emmy winning filmmaker Jim Brown and narrated by Kiefer Sutherland. Rock & Roll spread like an uncontrollable virus across Eastern Europe despite Communist attempts to outlaw it. Thousands of underground bands and millions of young fans who yearned for Western freedoms and embraced this music as the Sound of Freedom, helped fuel the nonviolent implosion of the Soviet regime. Free to Rock features Presidents, diplomats, spies and rock stars from the West and the Soviet Union who reveal how Rock & Roll music was a contributing factor in ending the Cold War. Q&A with executive producers Nick Binkley and Doug Yeager (author of the companion book) after the film.

Time: 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM
TANG Somers: Staring Back at the Sun: Video Art from Israel, 1970-2012 is a two-night video exhibition that traces the development of contemporary video practice in Israel and highlights work by artists who take an incisive, critical perspective toward the cultural and political landscape in Israel and beyond. Staring Back at the Sun showcases 35 works by 38 artists, including early performances, films and videos never before presented outside of Israel. Divided into four historic and thematic sections, Staring Back at the Sun focuses on the activist impulse in video art-making in Israel over the last four decades. The first night will feature the sections: 1970–80: Early Experiments in Time-Based Art and 1980–97: An Art Form Coming Into Its Own, both curated by Ilana Tenenbaum. The second night features 1997–2005: The Rise of the Medium, curated by Sergio Edelsztein, and 2005–12: State of Amnesia: Recent Video from Israel, curated by Yael Bartana and Avi Feldman. Informed by the international history of video art, the program traces the development of the medium in Israel and explores how artists have employed technology and material to examine the sociopolitical status quo.The work by the following artists will be shown over the two nights: Boaz Arad, Yossi Atia & Itamar Rose, Yael Bartana, Irit Batsry, Guy Ben Ner, Hila Lulu Lin Farah Kufr Birim, Michael Druks, Benni Efrat, Avraham Eilat, Nir Evron, Yair Garbuz, Gideon Gechtman, Moshe Gershuni, Tamar Getter, Dor Guez, Sigalit Landau, Raffi Lavie, Motti Mizrachi, Avi Mograbi, Michal Naaman, Joshua Neustein, Miri Nishri, Dov Or-Ner, Nira Pereg, Gilad Ratman, Roee Rosen, Buky Schwartz, Ruti Sela & Maayan Amir, Henry Shelesnyak, Ran Slavin, Doron Solomons, Micha Ullman, Rona Yefman, Dan Zakhem, Nana & Boaz Zonshine. Film Screening and discussion - No Más Bebés
Time: 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM
PALMTN Davis Auditorium: Please join us at 6:30 PM in Davis Auditorium for a screening of the film "No Más Bebés" and a talk with producer Virginia Espino. Free and open to the public.About the Film:No Más Bebés tells the story of a little-known but landmark event in reproductive justice, when a small group of Mexican immigrant women sued county doctors, the state, and the U.S. government after they were sterilized while giving birth at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Marginalized and fearful, many of these mothers spoke no English, and charged that they had been coerced into tubal ligation — having their tubes tied — by doctors during the late stages of labor. Often the procedure was performed after asking the mothers under duress. The mothers’ cause was eventually taken up by a young Chicana lawyer armed with hospital records secretly gathered by a whistle-blowing doctor. In their landmark 1975 civil rights lawsuit, Madrigal v. Quilligan, they argued that a woman’s right to bear a child is guaranteed under the Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade. The filmmakers spent five years tracking down sterilized mothers and witnesses. Most were reluctant at first to come forward, but ultimately agreed to tell their story. Set against a debate over the impact of Latino immigration and overpopulation, and the birth of a movement for Chicana rights and reproductive choice, No Más Bebés revisits a powerful story that still resonates today.About the Filmmaker:Virginia Espino (Producer) conducted original research on the Madrigal case that formed the basis for No Más Bebés. Her work was published in Las Obreras: Chicana Politics of Work and Family, edited by Vicki L. Ruiz, and Latinas in the United States: A Historical Encyclopedia. She is the Program Coordinator for Latina/o History at the UCLA Center for Oral History Research where she has interviewed the leading figures in contemporary Mexican American history. Espino received her PhD in History from Arizona State University.Sponsored by the departments of History, American Studies, and World Language and Literatures; the Latin American Studies Gender Studies programs; and the John B. Moore Documentary Studies Collaborative (MDOCS).

Malloy Lecture 2018
Time: 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM
FILENE Filene Recital Hall: Arthur Ganson thinks of himself as “a cross between a mechanical engineer and a choreographer.” He is interested in “gestures” — physical actions that express feelings and ideas. Ganson’s exquisitely designed kinetic sculptures have been exhibited in galleries and museums across the United States and Europe. He has held residencies at the Exploratorium in San Francisco and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, and has maintained an ongoing exhibition of his work at the MIT Museum since 1995. Besides making and exhibiting sculpture, he occasionally teaches classes in mechanics and wire bending. For the past 18 years he has been the ringleader of the MIT Museum’s Friday After Thanksgiving Chain Reaction, a community event in which families and students of all ages assemble a giant chain reaction. This event is free and open to the public; Sponsored by the Art Department

Ambition? Honor? Greed? Idealism? When the powerbrokers conspire to assassinate Caesar, their factions goad the ever-fickle citizens into angry mobs with charm, rhetoric, and empty promises. David Auditorium: "Resilience" chronicles the birth of a new movemet among pediatricians, therapists, educators, and communities, who are using cutting-edge brain science to disrupt cycles of violence, addiction and disease "Resilience" explores how treating those suffering from stress caused by Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) can improve children's lives, especially in poorer communities. The film, through featuring interviews with several leaders in the ACEs movement, focuses on the heroic charismatic individuals workign to find practical ways of treating what some research physicians call "toxic stress." Resilience reveals that toxic stress can trigger hormones that wreak havoc on the brains and bodies of children, while at the same time, chronicles the dawn of the ACEs movement that is determined to fight back. After the film, Dawn Daum, Co-author of "Trigger Points: Abuse Survivors Experiences of Parenting" will speak on parenting with ACEs and the importance of breaking the cycle of abuseDawn Daum, co-editor of "Parenting with PTSD," and mental health care manager at Transitional Services Association in Saratoga Springs, helps others put and keep pieces of their lives together. Dawn, a survivor of childhood abuse with an ACE score of 9 (on a scale of 0-10), is passionate about bringing trauma-informed care to the forefront of mental health and medical care. Through writing and public speaking, Dawn is working to raise awareness that parenthood has the potential to derail a person's recovery, no matter how "through it" she may feel. When she isn't working or capturing life on paper, she’s taking advantage of life's simple pleasures with her husband and two children. This event is open to the public
