Discipline-Specific Characteristics
for Academic Papers

Philosophy

The following are some characteristics of Philosophy papers, based on our examination of a paper from PH 204:

  • Presents a strong, well-argued thesis
  • Analyzes and evaluates the arguments of the assigned text
  • Provides an overview of the thinker to contextualized the readers
  • Considers and responds to possible objections to the thesis
  • Anticipates possible objections and addresses them

N.B.: A 200-level Philosophy paper is not like a professional Philosophy article or advanced research paper in Philosophy.
